LPG is obtained from the processing of natural gas (60%) and also from the refining of crude oil (40%). 200 million tonnes of LP gas were produced in 2006, accounting for approximately 2-3% of primary energy consumption worldwide.

LPG is transported from the gas fields or refinery installations to storage terminals by tanker or pipeline. The terminals can be refrigerated, pressurized or underground storage facilities (caverns). From these terminals, LPG is dispatched to LPG cylinder filling plants, bulk depots, major industrial end-users and to piped distribution networks by coastal tanker, barge, rail, tank truck or pipeline.
